Sun Hyper Offense VGC 2026 — Team Building Guide & Best Sets

How to build Sun HO in VGC 2026 Regulation M: drought setters, Chlorophyll abusers, best Pokémon choices and how to pilot the archetype.

Why This Archetype Dominates Regulation M 2026

Sun Hyper Offense is one of the most punishing archetypes in Regulation M-A because it stacks two layered win conditions onto a single weather setter. Mega Charizard Y instantly turns on Drought the moment it Mega Evolves, which simultaneously powers up Fire-type STAB to nuke levels, removes the charge turn from Solar Beam, and converts Weather Ball into a 100 BP Fire-type missile. With Mega Evolution being the only battle mechanic in this format, dedicating your Mega slot to a weather-setter that also functions as your primary attacker is enormously efficient — you get setup, sweeping, and matchup pressure in one slot.

The archetype currently sits at the very top of our meta analysis, with Sun HO scoring 9.0/10. The reason is structural: Sneasler and Incineroar form the format's strongest Fake Out core, Garchomp punishes Heatran-style answers, and Venusaur acts as a Chlorophyll cleaner that doubles speed under sun. Every game plan funnels back into the same idea — overwhelm with speed and power before the opponent can stabilize.

Core Pokémon in This Archetype

  • Charizard (Mega Y) — Drought setter, primary special attacker, and the team's identity. Heat Wave and Solar Beam are both nukes the moment it Mega Evolves.
  • Sneasler — Fake Out support and the format's premier physical attacker. Pairs perfectly with Charizard to deny opposing setup turns.
  • Incineroar — Intimidate pivot and second Fake Out. Provides the defensive backbone that lets Charizard freely Mega Evolve.
  • Garchomp — Ground coverage that punishes Fire-resists and pivots that try to wall Charizard.
  • Milotic — Bulky special pivot that punishes Intimidate users via Competitive and absorbs opposing Fire/Water threats.
  • Venusaur — Chlorophyll abuser that becomes one of the fastest Pokémon in the format under sun, plus a sleep-inducing utility piece.

How to Build the Team Step by Step

Start with Charizard holding Charizardite Y. This is non-negotiable — Drought is what defines the team. Build the rest of the squad to maximize the value of those sun turns.

Second, add your Double Fake Out core: Sneasler and Incineroar. These two give Charizard free Mega turns by either flinching threats or shifting matchups with Intimidate. Sneasler's Close Combat and Dire Claw also break the steel-and-rock answers that try to wall Charizard.

Third, include a Ground-type cleaner. Garchomp is ideal because it threatens Heatran-style sun checks, opposing Charizard, and any Electric pivot trying to chip you down.

Fourth, add a special bulk anchor. Milotic with Competitive turns Intimidate spam against you into a free Special Attack boost, which is the cleanest answer to Incineroar mirrors and opposing Sneasler-style cores.

Finally, fill the last slot with a sun abuser. Venusaur with Chlorophyll is the textbook pick — it doubles its Speed under Drought and lets you keep momentum even after Charizard goes down. If you want to compare alternative shells, our best VGC teams page has several Sun HO variants.

Key Moves & Items to Run

  • Charizard @ Charizardite Y — Heat Wave / Solar Beam / Weather Ball / Protect. Solar Power isn't usable post-Mega (it becomes Drought), but pre-Mega Blaze is fine. The spread combination is the entire reason this archetype exists.
  • Sneasler @ Focus Sash — Fake Out / Close Combat / Dire Claw / Protect. Sash guarantees the Fake Out turn that lets Charizard Mega safely.
  • Incineroar @ Assault Vest or Rocky Helmet — Fake Out / Knock Off / Flare Blitz / Parting Shot. Pivot that can flip momentum with Parting Shot into a sun abuser.
  • Garchomp @ Life Orb or Choice Scarf — Earthquake / Dragon Claw / Rock Slide / Protect. Earthquake hits both targets and finishes off chipped Mega Charizard mirrors.
  • Milotic @ Leftovers — Scald / Ice Beam / Recover / Protect. Competitive punishes the Intimidate spam this format runs.
  • Venusaur @ Focus Sash or Sitrus Berry — Energy Ball / Sludge Bomb / Sleep Powder / Protect. Sleep Powder is the surprise win condition under sun-boosted Speed.

How to Play This Archetype

Your strongest lead is Charizard + Sneasler. Mega Evolve turn one, Fake Out the bigger threat, and immediately fire a Heat Wave or Weather Ball. Most opposing teams cannot survive a turn-one Drought-boosted Heat Wave plus a Close Combat from Sneasler.

Against Trick Room or bulky balance, lead Incineroar + Charizard. Intimidate softens physical threats, Fake Out buys the Mega turn, and Parting Shot can swap into Venusaur for a sun-Speed cleaner. Against rain or Water-heavy teams, lead Charizard + Garchomp — Earthquake removes Electric pivots, and sun cuts opposing Water STAB damage in half.

The mid-game is about preserving Charizard's HP. Once your Mega is below 50%, pivot to Venusaur or Milotic and let them clean. Don't try to make Charizard sweep through five Pokémon — it's a battering ram, not a setup sweeper.

Common Weaknesses & How to Address Them

Rain teams are the biggest natural counter, since they overwrite Drought and turn off your Fire STAB. Garchomp and Venusaur (Energy Ball) handle the most common rain abusers, but you must lead with weather pressure — re-Mega situations don't exist, so winning the weather war turn one is critical.

Heatran-style Fire-immune walls can blank Charizard. This is exactly why Garchomp's Earthquake is mandatory. Ground coverage is non-negotiable.

Opposing Mega Charizard Y mirrors come down to who Mega Evolves second and lands the cleaner Heat Wave. Rock Slide from Garchomp wins these exchanges — if your opponent leads Charizard, you should be leading Sneasler + Garchomp.

Variations & Flex Slots

The most common flex slots are the bulk anchor and the sun abuser. Milotic can be swapped for Sinistcha for Rage Powder redirection, or for Whimsicott if you want Tailwind support instead of Competitive bulk. Venusaur can be replaced with Torkoal if you want a backup Drought setter for post-Charizard turns, though you sacrifice Chlorophyll Speed. Some builds also drop Garchomp for Kingambit as a Supreme Overlord late-game cleaner. Cross-reference our VGC tier list when deciding which flex piece fits your local meta best.

Sun Hyper Offense rewards aggressive, decisive play more than almost any archetype in Regulation M-A. If you want to test your own variant of this shell, head to the VGC Team Builder and start from the Charizard core, or browse complete tournament-ready lists on our best VGC teams page.
