Why Mega Malamar is Dominant in VGC 2026 Regulation M
Mega Malamar is one of Regulation M's most terrifying snowball threats, sitting at a modest 1.9% usage but punching well above its weight class thanks to a single mechanic: Contrary. When Mega Malamar clicks Superpower, it doesn't lose Attack and Defense — it gains them. Every hit makes it stronger and bulkier, and once the boosts stack two or three deep, very little in the format can stop the sweep.
What makes Mega Malamar particularly deadly in the current meta is its natural synergy with Trick Room. With base 73 Speed dropping to something manageable under Trick Room, Malamar becomes a slow, hyper-offensive brick that outspeeds nearly everything while accumulating Contrary boosts. Dark/Psychic typing also lets it threaten Ghost-heavy teams like the Mono-Ghost archetypes currently dominating tour play, and its immunity to Psychic-type moves gives it free switch-ins on Expanding Force and Psyshock users. Check our meta analysis for how Contrary attackers have quietly climbed the rankings.
Best Malamar Moveset for Regulation M
- Superpower — The core of the entire set. With Contrary, this becomes a boosting STAB-adjacent move that hits +1 Attack / +1 Defense every use. 45.9% of Malamar sets run this for good reason: it wins 54.3% of games it appears in.
- Knock Off — STAB Dark move that removes Choice Scarves, Life Orbs, and Sitrus Berries from key threats. Boasts the highest per-move win rate on Malamar at 57.1%. Excellent utility even when you're not sweeping.
- Trick Room — The optional-but-devastating fourth slot on many builds. Malamar's low Speed becomes an asset, and it can set the room itself if your dedicated setter faints. 22.3% usage, 53.7% win rate.
- Psycho Cut — Reliable Psychic STAB that punishes Fighting-types who try to revenge kill Malamar after it Mega Evolves. Alternatively, Foul Play works if you want to punish physical attackers without contributing your own stats.
Best Item & Ability
The item is non-negotiable: Mega Malamar requires no other item — it Mega Evolves via its species mechanic. Pre-Mega, Malamar's ability is Contrary, which carries over post-Mega Evolution and is the entire reason to run this Pokémon. Every Superpower simultaneously buffs its offense and defense, turning what would be a downside move into the best snowball tool in the format.
EV-wise, most builds invest heavily in HP and Attack with a Brave nature and minimum Speed IVs, letting Malamar function as a slow Trick Room sweeper. A bulky spread also lets it survive a hit, click Superpower, and effectively "heal" its physical bulk on the boost.
Best Partners & Team Synergies
Malamar's best partners according to 112k+ battles all revolve around either enabling Trick Room, breaking shared checks, or absorbing Fairy/Bug damage:
- Chandelure (54.1% WR together) — The premier partner. Chandelure can set Trick Room, threatens Fairies and Bugs with Fire/Ghost coverage, and shares zero weaknesses with Malamar. A dedicated Chandelurite build turns this into a devastating Trick Room duo.
- Hisuian Zoroark (53.3% WR) — Illusion mind-games let Zoroark disguise as Malamar or vice versa, baiting Fairy moves into a Ghost/Normal type that resists or is immune to them.
- Primarina (52.9% WR) — Fairy STAB that handles the Dark-types that resist Malamar, plus redirection and slow pivoting synergy under Trick Room.
- Basculegion (52.7% WR) — Provides Water STAB and Last Respects pressure, forming an offensive core that overwhelms defensive teams.
- Kommo-o (52.4% WR) — Fairy resistance, Clangorous Soul threat, and shared Fighting coverage make it a strong secondary attacker.
Farigiraf is also worth considering as a Trick Room setter with Armor Tail priority protection, similar to the Sun + Trick Room Mega Golurk archetype currently seeing tournament success.
How to Play Malamar in VGC 2026
Malamar is almost always a back-line finisher, not a lead. Your typical game plan:
- Lead with your Trick Room setter (Chandelure, Farigiraf) alongside a Fake Out user or redirector to buy the turn.
- Turn 2 pivot Malamar in, Mega Evolve, and begin clicking Superpower. Even at +0, Contrary means every subsequent Superpower gains +1/+1.
- After 2 Superpowers, Malamar is at +2 Attack and +2 Defense, which typically means it can survive a super-effective Fairy hit and OHKO nearly anything neutral.
- Use Knock Off on turns where you need to disable an opposing item (Focus Sash, Choice Scarf, Sitrus Berry) before pressing the sweep.
Watch out for Wide Guard against your Superpower spam — it's a real problem versus Corviknight and Kommo-o teams. Also be aware that Contrary means opposing Intimidate raises your Attack, so leading into Incineroar cores is actually favorable.
Weaknesses & How to Counter Malamar
The meta identifies three primary Malamar counters:
- Scovillain — Fire/Grass typing walls Malamar's Superpower (resisted) and threatens 4x super-effective damage back. If Scovillain runs Chlorophyll under Sun teams, it outspeeds and OHKOs.
- Gardevoir — Fairy STAB from Mega Gardevoir with Pixilate Hyper Voice cuts through Malamar before it can boost, and Gardevoir's Trace can even steal Contrary in mirror scenarios.
- Gallade — Mega Gallade with Sharpness-boosted Psycho Cut or Fairy coverage denies Malamar's setup while resisting Superpower.
Beyond these three, any strong Fairy attacker (Mega Floette's Light of Ruin, Primarina's Moonblast) can revenge-kill before Contrary snowballs. Taunt also shuts down Malamar's Trick Room utility, and Haze or Clear Smog resets its boosts — though these are rare in Reg M.
The most reliable answer is speed control disruption: if you can prevent Trick Room from going up, Malamar's low Speed and mono-Contrary reliance make it much easier to pick off with Tailwind offense like the Aerodactyl/Floette Champion builds.
